Seminar on Tidal Wetlands--Cancelled

The Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Research Seminar Series continues online.  This week’s event, on Thursday, Nov 18, at 3:30 p.m., features renowned wetland ecologist Laura Brophy, who studies Oregon’s estuarine and lower-river marshes and tidal swamps.  Her topic: “Past, present and future of tidal wetlands in the Yaquina Bay Estuary.”  The seminar is free and open to all.

Laura Brophy is the Director of the Estuary Technical Group, part of the Institute for Applied Ecology; the owner and principal of Green Point Consulting, which provides advice on wetland conservation and restoration; and on the courtesy faculty of Oregon State University’s College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, where she conducts and directs research to advance restoration science and bridge the research-application divide.  She has more than 25 years of experience with the Pacific Northwest’s wetlands.

Her description of her talk:

“What did the Yaquina Bay Estuary look like 200 years ago? What might it look like a hundred years in the future? The estuary has always been dynamic, but this period has seen especially broad changes related to human impacts. In this presentation, we'll travel through time so you can visualize the estuary's past, how it has changed, and its potential future -- and we'll talk about what these changes mean to people and wildlife that live here and use the estuary.”
