Sharing the Coast and King Tide Party

Whether or not you are attending the Sharing the Coast Conference on March 9, you are invited to the party that caps the day.  This year the annual event is doing double duty, by serving also as our wrap-up celebration of this winter’s successful King Tide Project.

Festivities take place at the Rogue Brewery in the South Beach area of Newport (2320 S.E. Marine Science Dr., near the Hatfield Marine Science Center where the conference is taking place).  Doors open at 5 p.m., with the party getting underway at 5:30.  The event is free and open to all.  Appetizers will be served; other food and beverages available for purchase from the Rogue.

Speaker will be Meg Reed, Coastal Shores Specialist with the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD), and CoastWatch’s partner in organizing the King Tide Project.  Meg will discuss the effects of rising sea level and stronger storm surges on Oregon’s shoreline, and the questions we face about how to address these impacts.  She will also provide an overview of the King Tide photography project, explain why documenting these highest tides of the year is important, and point the way to next winter’s 10^th annual edition of the project.

The evening will also feature a showing of King Tide photos.  Photographer Rena Olson will introduce a slide tour of the Coquille River watershed during a January king tide, with aerial photos that she and fellow contributing CoastWatch photographer Alex Derr took during a flight donated by Lighthawk.
