The tenth annual Sharing the Coast Conference will take place March 8-10 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (2030 S.E. Marine Science Dr.) in the South Beach area of Newport. The event will feature speakers, panels, and field trips, all designed to provide CoastWatchers with monitoring skills and deepen their background knowledge of coastal science and natural history. The public is invited, and the presentations will be of interest to anyone who wishes to learn more about the coast. Co-sponsor as in past years is the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators.
The main portion of the conference, after a Friday evening "Community Talk" by naturalist Marty Giles (see separate listing), begins at 9 a.m. (doors open at 8:30) on Saturday, March 9, in the Hennings Auditorium at the marine science center. On Sunday, March 10, a number of field trips will be planned, with indoor alternatives if the weather is forbidding.
Saturday will bring a full slate of talks, relating in one way or another to CoastWatch monitoring and citizen science, but of interest to anyone who loves the shore. Among other speakers, long-time CoastWatch favorite Cynthia Trowbridge, a marine ecologist and expert on all things littoral, will deliver a detailed exploration of “The Ecology of the Driftline”; renowned intertidal ecologist Bruce Menge will speak on rocky shores, climate change, and sea stars; environmental scientist Dorothy Horn will discuss marine debris, microplastics, and how they are affecting our coast; and Catherine de Rivera, chair of the Environmental Science and Management Department at Portland State University, will consider non-native species introduced to estuaries and possibly reaching the outer shores. These talks will all take place in the Hatfield Marine Science Center auditorium; NAME is also organizing a parallel track with workshops for educators and coastal interpreters.
