Taylor Chapple, an assistant professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University, will speak on “Understanding the Coastal Behaviors of White Sharks ,” as part of the HMSC Seminar Series in the Guin Library seminar room at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (2030 S.E. Marine Science Dr.) in the South Beach area of Newport.  His lecture, free and open to the public, takes place at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13.

As Chapple describes the talk’s subject matter:  “White sharks  (Carcharodon carcharias) are top predators, helping shape and maintain marine communities. Over the past 20 years we have gained an understanding of the coastal dynamics and behaviors of these predators from populations around the world. Using 15 year of data from white sharks in California and South Africa I will explore their coastal behavior, life history and ecosystem impacts and their potential future role in warming coastal ecosystems.”
