Those interested in helping to monitoring the coast’s snowy plover population during nesting season are invited to a training session on Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in the meeting hall at Nehalem Bay State Park.  The park is located on Nehalem spit, between Nehalem and Manzanita.

Snowy plovers, which nest on open beaches and are thus highly vulnerable to disturbance and to losing their habitat to the spread of invasive beachgrass, are threatened, although efforts to restore habitat and protect the birds while on their nests have brought an uptick in their numbers.  Volunteers are needed to help keep watch over nesting areas at five sites on the north coast, from the Clatsop Spit to Sitka Sedge State Natural Area near Pacific City.  Surveys take place twice a month, and can be physically demanding.
