Spring Whale Watch Week

Note: due to coronavirus precautions, there will be no volunteer Whale watch guides at the viewing sites. But the whales will still be there.

State Parks has announced that Whale Watch Week will not be observed this spring as a precaution in addressing the coronavirus situation.

This spring, during peak Gray Whale migration, Oregon's best whale watching spots will be staffed for nine days by Oregon State Park interpreters, March 21-29.

During Spring Whale Watch, March 21-29, Oregon State Parks staffers can be found at the best whale-watching locations all along the Oregon Coast, along with trained volunteers, to help visitors spot Gray Whales. In spring, approximately 20,000 Gray Whales migrate north, traveling from their breeding lagoons in Baja California to their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic. On this northbound journey, the whales migrate relatively close to shore and often linger along the Oregon Coast, particularly female Gray Whales with calves who travel slower and closer to shore. Bring your binoculars and enjoy this spectacular sight from the many elevated overlooks up and down the Oregon Coast.
