Sylvia Earle Talk in Portland

Widely renowned oceanographer and global ocean advocate Sylvia Earle will speak in Portland on Sunday, May 19, at 4 p.m. in the Portland State University Viking Pavilion (in the Peter W. Stott Center, 930 S.W. Hall St.).  Her talk is sponsored by SAGE (Senior Advocates for Generational Equity) and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.  Oregon Shores is a promotional sponsor of the event.

Her talk will be preceded beginning at 2:30 p.m. by an Oceans Expo featuring live music and exhibits on marine conservation, research, and volunteer opportunities. 

Dr. Earle will speak about the future of our oceans.  Popularly known as “Her Deepness,” she has been an inspiring marine conservationist for many decades.  Earle will discuss the world’s oceans as the source of all life, why they’re in peril from pollution, over-use and climate change, and how we can be a part of an all-out effort to save them. She’ll be joined by young leaders with the message that, together, we can restore the blue heart of our planet.

Sylvia Earle is Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic Society, founder of Mission Blue, founder of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, and former Chief Scientist of NOAA. She has received 27 honorary doctorates, has authored more than 200 publications and led more than 100 expeditions with over 7,000 hours underwater. Her research concerns the ecology and conservation of marine ecosystems and the development of technology for deep sea access.
