Tahkenitch Dunes Hike
Join the Friends of the Umpqua, a Roseburg Oregon Hiking Group, on a hike to the Tahkenitch Dunes on Saturday Dec. 15 meeting in the the Douglas County Courthouse (1036 SE Douglas Ave # 201, Roseburg) parking lot behind the old Douglas County Library at 8 a.m. In general, most hikes take an hour to an hour and a half driving time each direction.
This hike is rated moderate, 7-9 miles. Explore the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area at Tahkenitch Dunes, north of Reedsport. This hike is a dune ecosystem tour-de-force as the group will climb hills, amble through a mossy forest, stroll on the beach, and maybe cross a large creek twice. This hike will be approximately 9 miles and will involve two creek wades, conditions permitting. If Tahkenitch Creek is running deep and/or fast, they will do a creekless loop approximately 7 miles long.
Each person should bring water, lunch, layers of clothing including raingear. If you wish to carpool then please come prepared to share gas expenses. Driving time to trailheads and hike length are estimates only.
Wear seasoned boots. Stay with the group and on the trail. If lost, stay put. Each hiker hikes at his or her own risk and is responsible for his or her own health, safety and welfare. Hiking destinations may be changed due to weather conditions or other concerns.
