The Southcoast Striders hiking group offers a group tour of the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail and Threemile Lake on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 9:30 a.m.
Two options are available for this hike. The first is along the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail as it winds through the woods to where Tahkenitch Creek empties onto the beach and returns along the same trail for a 3.5 mile trip out and back. This option will take approximately 2.5-3 hours. The second option is to take a longer, more vigorous hike--a 6 mile loop combining the Tahkenitch Dune trail and the Threemile Lake trail. This longer hike is rated difficult, due to sand, and will last around 4 hours.
Meet at the Tahkenitch Dunes Day Use Area parking lot, eight miles north of Reedsport on the west side of the highway (milepost 204). This is a Forest Service day use area, a $5 day use fee per vehicle or appropriate pass is required for parking at this trailhead. Passes can be purchased ahead of time here.
Bring lunch and water, and dress in layers for a variety of possible weather.
