Ron Metzger leading a field trip.

Shoreline Education for Awareness (SEA) presents a “Geologic Overview of Oregon’s South Coast” on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m.  The online event is free and open to all.

The speaker is Ron Metzger, a professor of geology at Southwestern Oregon Community College.  (He has spoken several times to Oregon Shores audiences, and we can testify that he is a great science communicator.) Armed with a PhD in paleontology from the University of Iowa, Dr. Metzger has been a member of the Southwestern Oregon Community College faculty since the fall of 1996.  At SWOCC he has served as Faculty Senate Chair and is the faculty ex-officio member of the College Foundation Board.  One of his most significant local contributions has been the development of the geology lecture series that has brought prominent scientists to the college to present free lectures on cutting edge topics to students and the community since 2000.

This SEA talk will start with a short descriptive background on plate tectonics, and explore the striking geology displayed in Coos County, shaped by tectonics and coastal processes, from the dune fields to waterfalls and a spectacular display of missing time.  Metzger will also touch on the Cascadia Subduction Zone.  There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
