Oregon State University’s Science on Tap series, usually held at the Rogue Brewery in Newport, has moved online, so you will have to bring your own beer while enjoying presentations via Zoom.

Next up, on Thursday, June 26, 6 p.m., is Walking the Docks…Virtually,” a survey of the Newport fishing industry led by Angee Doerr, the Oregon Sea Grant Extension marine fisheries specialist based in Newport.  She will discuss the various components of Newport’s $56 million (well, at least pre-coronavirus) fishing industry and lead a virtual tour of the Newport waterfront.  Much of what she will have to say will be applicable to other Oregon ports, of course.

In her work, Doerr focuses on commercial fisheries and marine coastal resources, providing community outreach and education on subjects ranging from marine resource management to nearshore energy and sustainable economic growth for coastal industries. She works with community partners, including commercial fishermen, managers, and researchers, to advance our understanding of fisheries and other marine resources in Oregon and along the west coast. She holds a BS, an MBA and a Ph.D. focused on socially and ecologically sustainable fisheries. Angee is currently a commander in the US Navy Reserves, having spent eight years on active duty as a naval flight officer and nine years in the Reserves as the Officer-in-Charge of a variety of units.
