Fawn Custer, known to many CoastWatchers as our long-time volunteer coordinator, has stepped into a new role as our citizen science trainer.  She has planned her first guided beachwalk of the fall season for Sunday, Oct. 13, beginning at 9 a.m. at South Beach State Park (5580 S.W. Coast Hwy), just south of Newport.  Meet in the day use parking lot.  If you arrive late, you won’t have any trouble finding the group out on the shore—just look for Fawn’s trademark orange rainpants.  The event is free and open to everyone, both those wishing to learn more about CoastWatch, and those who are simply interested in coastal natural history.

Custer will discuss everything found on the beach, both its living creatures and the plants and animals (and, sadly marine debris) found in the wrackline (or driftline, as it is known to some).  She will also provide an introduction to CoastWatch monitoring and briefly discuss some aspects of the program’s citizen science projects, such as the survey for the aforementioned marine debris.  Questions are highly encouraged.
