The Southcoast Striders hiking group offers a hike devoted to viewing “yardangs,” wind-sculpted, temporary sand structures in the dunes.  The hike, on Sunday, Jan. 16, beginning at 10 a.m., leaves from the Hall Lake Day Use Area (turn off Hwy 101 across from Tugman State Park, about eight miles south of Reedsport).

The main hike is a three-mile trip, rated moderate-to-difficult, through the dunes between Hall Lake and the ocean.  This will be a slow and steady hike, lasting two to two-and-a-half hours.  Hiking sticks are recommended.

If there is sufficient interest, and a volunteer leader steps forward, a more adventurous group can head to the beach and return for a six-or-seven mile round trip.  If you would be willing to lead such a longer hike, e-mail hikes@coostrails.com.
