Webinar on Forest Structure

The Lower Nehalem Community Trust offers a webinar on the importance of forest habitats.  “The Impact of Forest Structure on Water Quality and Native Fish” takes place on Thursday, July 15, at 6 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.  (This is a re-broadcast of an earlier webinar.)

Gabe Sheoships and Joshua Seeds will discuss the importance of complex forest structure in the protection of water quality and habitat for native fish. In coastal Oregon, forests and fish feel pressures from growing fire threats, sky-high timber and land prices encouraging development, rising demands for recreation, evolving regulations, and changing climate due to global warming. At the same time, appreciation grows for the cultural beliefs and stewardship practices of the indigenous peoples who thrived here for many thousands of years before these lands and waters became subject to modern development and market-driven extraction of fish and timber.

Sheoships is president of Tributaries Network and an enrolled citizen of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.  Seeds is Technical Assistance Coordinator for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s Drinking Water Protection and Nonpoint Source Pollution Programs. 

The presentations will be followed by a live question and answer session moderated by Peter Karnig.  Professor Trygve Steen, who taught forest ecology at Portland State University for decades, will also be on hand to answer questions.
