King Tides Project—First Round

The annual King Tides Project, co-sponsored by CoastWatch and the Oregon Coastal Management Program, kicks off the winter with a series of high tides Nov. 5-7.

Through this citizen science project, volunteer photographers document the reach of the year’s highest tides (known as “king tides”).  Photographs taken near the peak of the tide during this series, whether on the outer shore, in estuaries, or on lower rivers, provide information on the current risks of flooding, and preview what will become typical tides in future decades.

The last day of this round is Sunday, Nov. 7, 1:06 p.m. (with exact times varying up and down the coast).  Note that daylight savings ends early on Sunday--don't forget to set clocks back before timing your visit to the shore for photos.

The other two king tide sequences that will be the focus of the project for 2021-2022 take place December 3-5, and January 1-3, 2022.
