Seminar on Deep Seeps

The Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Thursday Research Seminar Series continues online with a talk on Thursday, March 31, at 3:30 p.m.  The topic: “Initial Results from E/V Nautilus Expedition NA128 “Cascadia Margin Seep Exploration."  Oregon Shores always describes our territory as being “from the crest of the coastal mountains to the edge of the continental shelf”—this talk deals with the furthest edge of that range.

The speaker is Jeff Beeson, Principal Investigator in the Cooperative Institute of Marine Ecosystems and Resource Studies (CIMERS) and NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL), based at Hatfield Marine Science Center.

His description of his topic:

“Over the past half-decade, Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) and NOAA Ocean Exploration (OE) have supported numerous expeditions to the Cascadia margin for the purpose of seep exploration. From those expeditions, the scope and breadth of knowledge on the spatial distribution and chemical composition of seepage in Cascadia has increased by orders of magnitude. We will present new data and initial findings from the most recent seep exploration expedition in July 2021. E/V Nautilus and the science party undertook a 16-day cruise that resulted in 11 ROV dives at 9 different locations. These dive locations spanned as far south as latitude N43.3º and as far north as latitude N46.7º. Water depths ranged from as shallow as 150 meters to as deep as 1800 meters.”
