Friends of Otter Rock is a non-profit organization on the central Oregon coast composed of local conservation-minded citizens. Its mission is the protection and preservation of rocky shore intertidal life, nesting and migrating sea birds, and marine mammals in the vicinity of the Otter Rock Marine Reserve. Oregon Shores serves as the group’s fiscal sponsor and supports its efforts.

This summer, Friends of Otter Rock will be delivering its first volunteer interpretive program. A training session for prospective volunteers will take place on Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.  Meet by the public restrooms at Devils Punchbowl State Park.

Volunteers will interact with visitors at the site, inspiring stewardship and raising awareness of Otter Rock Marine Reserve. Over the course of this training session, prospective volunteers will learn about local wildlife, geology, and history, and be equipped with interpretive techniques to connect with visitors.

The first part of the day, will be walking around Otter Rock Marine Reserve (some tide pooling will be involved). The second part of the day will be indoors. Masks are required for the indoor session.  Bring closed-toe shoes, jacket/raincoat, snacks, water, and mask. Registration is required.

This program will run from mid-June through early September. Volunteers should aim to commit to at least one two-hour time slot each weekend. Time slots range between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekend days.
