Lecture on Jellyfish

The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) is hosting alecture on Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in the OIMB Boathouse Auditorium (63466 Boat Basin Rd in Charleston). The speaker for this event is Dr. Kelly Sutherland from the University of Oregon and her talk is titled "How do jellyfish swim? Performance insights from Earth’s oldest jetpropelled swimmers.”

About the Dr. Sutherland's lab:

"Research in the Sutherland lab is at the intersection of biology and physics: our goal is gain a mechanistic understanding of how marine organisms interact with one another and within their fluid environment. We use a variety of tools including in situ video, kinematic analysis, and flow visualization to understand how the environment is experienced at the organismal scale. These observations can be related to smaller-scale physiological problems or to larger-scale population patterns and food-web dynamics. Students working in the lab use innovative techniques and a mechanistic approach to investigate how organisms function in the marine environment, and more broadly, to understand ecological roles and evolutionary relationships."

This event is free and open to all. Registration is not required. To reach the OIMB Boathouse Auditorium, park on Boat Basin Rd. near the campus and walk down the road past the Coast Guard housing.
