Birders and bird-lovers all over the nation, including the Oregon coast, participate every year in the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count.  This is a form of citizen science that has been running for decades.

There are a lot of active birders in the Newport area (not a few of them CoastWatchers), as reflected in the presence of the Yaquina Birders & Naturalists.  On Thursday, December 17, this group will sponsor a talk by biologist and artist Ram Papish:  The Christmas Bird Count: Facts and Photos from 42 Years of Counting Yaquina Bay Birds.

Papish will highlight trends in winter bird populations in the area based on this annual citizen scientist event.   This Yaquina Birders & Naturalists meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Public Meeting Room of Central Lincoln PUD (2129 North Coast Highway) in north Newport.  The event is free and open to all.
