Flying Offshore: Getting to Know Curry's Seabirds

Seabirds wander vast stretches of the sea, but when it comes time to nest, tens of thousands of them call Curry County home. Kalmiopsis Audubon Society president Ann Vileisis will give a presentation about seabirds and the South Coast’s special role in providing for their breeding habitat. The presentation will feature the photographs of Lois Miller, well-known on the south coast (certainly to readers of the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society’s newsletter) as a superb nature photographer.

In addition to her work as a conservation leader, Ann Vileisis is an author who writes about the natural world.  Her book Discovering the Unknown Landscape is a valuable introduction to wetlands.

And we can’t resist noting that the wildlife refuge at Crook Point, just south of Gold Beach, is one of the most important of these breeding habitats.  Oregon Shores has been working for many years to protect this natural area from a proposed golf resort development which could threaten the birds that nest there.
