In 2008, the United Nations officially recognized June 8 as the annual World Oceans Day. Events are held around the world, coordinated by The Ocean Project: http://www.worldoceansday.org/about.

One suggestion made by The Ocean Project is to obtain official recognition of the day from your local jurisdiction—city, county, state, or other such as school district. Support materials for mounting such a campaign can be found on the website.
