As part of Coos Bay’s celebration of the March for Science, Dr. Allen Solomon will deliver a keynote lecture, “Climate Change and Its Potential Impacts on Coastal Oregon.”  The talk takes place at 3 p.m. in Coos Bay’s Egyptian Theatre (229 S. Broadway).  It is free and open to the public.

Al Solomon, a Charleston resident who is a former Oregon Shores board member, is a plant ecologist and paleoecologist who studied the terrestrial ecology of the global carbon cycle for more than 30 years. He retired as the National Program Leader for Global Change Research in the U.S. Forest Service in Washington DC, where he coordinated global change research efforts within the Forest Service, and between the Forest Service and other federal and state global change research programs. Before coming to the Forest Service in 2006, Solomon held professorships at Michigan Technological University and University of Arizona, and staff positions with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna Austria. He was awarded the 2003 Ecological Society of America Distinguished Service Citation, and contributed to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).  Upon retirement, he and his wife returned to the south coast in late 2009, to the house on Cape Arago where they have lived (when not in Washington, D.C.) since 1994.
