Mother’s Day March

This Mother’s Day, May 14, we’re celebrating the famous Mother’s Day March, led by then-Treasurer, later Governor Bob Straub, in 1966.  The original march helped to galvanize opposition to a plan that would have moved Highway 101 to run down the Nestucca Spit, drastically altering the shoreline.  We’re honoring the Mother’s Day March as part of our year-long celebration of the Oregon Beach Bill’s 50^th anniversary year.

We’ll gather at Pacific City’s Kiawanda Community Center (34600 Kiwanda Dr.) at 10:30 a.m.  After a few preliminary remarks, we’ll head to the access point to Bob Straub State Park and walk down the spit.  We’ll do this rain or shine, but the length of the walk will depend on the weather.

We will then return to the Kiawanda Center for a talk by Charles K. Johnson, author of Standing at the Water’s Edge:  Bob Straub’s Battle for the Soul of Oregon.  Chuck will describe not only the event itself and the successful battle to keep a highway off the shoreline, but the key role former Gov. Straub played in establishing our legacy of public beaches. For more of the story, see our longer article describing the events of that year.
