Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer is offering two CoastWatch trainings in one day on Tuesday, May 9.  These are intended first and foremost for CoastWatch mile adopters—or prospective CoastWatch volunteers—but are open and free to everyone.

At 12:30 p.m., Fawn will lead a basic CoastWatch Clinic—an introduction to monitoring a CoastWatch mile and filling out the report form, together with an explanation of the protocols for our marine debris, beached bird, and marine mammal stranding citizen science surveys.  Meet at the Driftwood Beach State Wayside, on Highway 101 between Seal Rock and Waldport.  This “clinic,” focusing on sandy beaches, will last until about 2:30 p.m. (although of course it will be possible to peel away sooner if need be).

At 3 p.m., the scene will shift to Seal Rock State Park, where Fawn will begin another CoastWatch training focused on tidepools and rocky shore areas.  There will be a brief discussion of the geology and vegetation of the area, after which the group will venture down to the tidepools to learn about rocky shore ecosystems and how to monitor them for CoastWatch.

Feel free to attend either or both.  Drive between the two locations, or arrange a car drop and walk up the beach from one to the other.
