The annual celebration of the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and Port Orford’s fishing-based community, Redfish Rocks on the Docks, is coming up May 20, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on, where else, the Port Orford dock. CoastWatch will be there.
The family-friendly event is organized by the Redfish Rocks Community Team, in partnership with the Port Orford commercial fishing fleet. It provides an opportunity to explore, investigate, and discover more about the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve, ocean-based research, local seafood, a seaweed farm, the Port Orford fishing fleet, water quality, marine debris, ocean acidification, and more. Learn how you can get involved with caring for the natural resources we all depend on through stewardship and citizen science programs. Not least, free food and drink will be on hand.
At 1:30 p.m., CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer will lead a basic CoastWatch Clinic—an introduction to monitoring a CoastWatch mile and filling out the report form, together with an explanation of the protocols for our marine debris, beached bird, and marine mammal stranding citizen science surveys.
And at 2:30 p.m., Fawn will lead a guided walk exploring the driftline. The group will leave from the Oregon Shores/CoastWatch table on the dock and walk to the shoreline on the south side of the dock.
