Cape Perpetua BioBlitz, Day 1

This is the 50th anniversary year of the Oregon Beach Bill, mandating that all of Oregon's shoreline--not only beaches, but rocky shores as well--remain in public hands. To celebrate this anniversary, a weekend BioBlitz (an inventory of all species found in an area at one time) has been organized at Cape Perpetua.  Volunteers are needed.  Sponsors include State Parks and the Forest Service, along with the Audubon Society of Portland and the Oregon Marine Reserves Partnership, of which Oregon Shores is a member.

The weekend will start off with a presentation on the sea star wasting disease epizootic at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center, Friday, May 26,  at 4 p.m.

The following day (Saturday, May 27) they will be taking advantage of the -2.5 ft. low tide by starting the BioBlitz work at 8 a.m., with volunteers meeting again at the Visitor Center. This BioBlitz will focus mostly on intertidal species, with an added emphasis on Ochre Sea Stars (Pisaster ochraceus). Participants will go through a short training talk before splitting up and starting their surveys, expected to last until about noon.

On Sunday (May 28), the second phase of the BioBlitz will take place beginning at 9 a.m., focusing more on the beach areas of the Cape Perpetua region. The event will finish up with a group picnic at Neptune State Park at noon.
