South Coast Beach Bill Beachwalk

Thursday, July 6, is the actual 50^th anniversary of the day in 1967 when Gov. Tom McCall signed the Oregon Beach Bill.  On July 6, 2017, Oregon Shores is sponsoring two events honoring the occasion.  One is on the north coast in Cannon Beach.  But the south coast hasn’t been neglected—CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer will lead a special beachwalk, beginning at noon at Bandon’s Coquille Point.  This free event is open to everyone.

Fawn will be joined by two marine mammal experts:  Dawn Goley, who directs the northern California branch of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, and Jim Rice, who directs Oregon’s Marine Mammal Stranding Network.  They will provide background information on our marine mammals and how to observe them and report strandings, and discuss a current research project on the southern Oregon coast for which volunteers are needed. There will also be plenty of time for Fawn to discuss some basic shoreline ecology and point out driftline finds along the way.  She will also talk about the Beach Bill and what it means to Oregon and to CoastWatch.
