Ordinarily, we wouldn’t list a talk about ecology in Ireland, since we keep things closer to home.  But in this case, the speaker is Cynthia Trowbridge, an old friend of CoastWatch and Oregon Shores.  She is one of the leading experts on the tidepools and shorelines of our state, but also does a lot of her research in Ireland.

Dr. Trowbridge will be speaking at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, in the Boathouse Auditorium at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (where she teaches during the summer), as part of OIMB’s summer seminar series.  Her talk is titled Tarnishing of a jewel: boom-and-bust cycles of purple sea urchins in Lough Hyne Marine Reserve, Ireland.

Talks in this series are free and open to the public, although they are primarily aimed at scientists and science students and aren’t necessarily popularized for non-scientists.  For those seriously interested in coastal science, though, they represent an opportunity to listen in on the scientists.

The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology is located at 63466 Boat Basin Rd. in Charleston.  To reach the auditorium, park near the campus and walk down Boat Basin Rd. past the Coast Guard housing.  For more information, call (541) 888-2581 or e-mail oimb@uoregon.edu.
