Oregon harbors a world expert on the taxonomy of seaweed in Gayle Hansen, a senior researcher based with the Environmental Protection Agency outpost at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.  Hansen, also an Oregon State University Associate Professor, is an expert in Oregon’s marine algae, aka seaweed, and field known as phycology.  Incidentally, she has been generous with her time in helping to educate CoastWatchers, and is a CoastWatcher herself (Mile 206).

Dr. Hansen will share some of her knowledge with the public in a somewhat different setting this Thursday, Aug. 10, 5 p.m. (meet and mingle at 4:30 p.m.) at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Otis (56605 Sitka Drive, off Three Rocks Rd., which crosses Hwy 101 just north of the Salmon River).  Her talk on the form and function of seaweed is part of the Sitka Center’s Mingle and Muse program.  You’ll have a chance to enjoy refreshments and drinks while chatting with other visitors before the talk.
