National Estuaries Week Arrives in September
National Estuaries Week is a nationwide event supported by Restore America’s Estuaries, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Estuarine Research Reserve Association, the Association of National Estuary Programs, and countless other associations and agencies. This year, National Estuaries week will be held Sept. 16-23.
Since 1988, National Estuaries Week has celebrated the many ways we benefit from healthy, thriving coastal ecosystems. Throughout the country, local organizations organize special events, like beach cleanups, hikes, canoe and kayak trips, workshops and more to recognize the special role these places play in our lives. National Estuaries Week is a spur to learn more about estuaries and the perfect excuse to spend time on your local bay.
The 2016 edition of National Estuaries Week was the most successful event to date, according to Restore America’s Estuaries. More than 19,000 volunteers provided over 90,000 hours of service to restoring and importing the nation’s estuaries in more than 150 activities across the United States.
One Oregon celebration, a bit late, will be held by Coos Bay Surfrider Chapter along with the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, who are hosting Stand Up For The Bay on Sept. 30. This local event is designed to bring the bay and waterways into the focus of citizens in the community. The event will take place in downtown Coos Bay, at the public dock/boardwalk. Registration starts at 9 a.m.; paddle kickoff is 10 a.m. sharp. Click here to view the full details of the event.
