Sea Star Survey
The last sea star survey of the season at the Yachats site for this citizen science project has been tentatively planned for Thursday, Sept. 7, 7:30 a.m., at Yachats State Park. (Many citizen science activities heat up in the autumn, but sea stars are surveyed in the lower intertidal, which can be too dangerous in winter.)
Karen Heere, who leads the team surveying for sea stars at that site, announced the date. However, she needs volunteer help--the survey demands at least two people, preferably more. She proposes to meet fellow volunteers at 7:30 a.m. at the wooden platform in Yachats State Park (Oceanside Drive). Wear sturdy shoes and a windbreaker. This is an opportunity for new and old volunteers to learn more about wasting disease and recovery--both veterans and rookies welcome.
RSVPs are needed. Since Karen needs at least one additional volunteer, she has to know that at least one person will join her. Contact her at kheere@yahoo.com.
If you can't be there on Thursday, but would like to know more about sea star surveying anywhere on the coast, contact Fawn Custer at (541) 270-0027, fawn@oregonshores.org.
