In many areas of the coast, local water districts have little control over the watershed drainage which supply their cities and towns with drinking water year round. Progressive Action Tillamook (a citizen’s information network) and other groups are presenting an open public forum on the issue of “Are coastal drinking waters at risk?” on Friday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 – 8 p.m. This event will be held at the Nestucca Rural Fire District Office (aka Hebo Fire Station) on Highway 101, about a quarter-mile north of the intersection of Hwys 101 and 22.
The forum will feature a panel consisting of Lisa Arkin of Beyond Toxics; Dr. Susan Katz, an expert on toxicology; and Jason Gonzales of Oregon Wild . The short film "Beyond the Emerald Curtain," by Shane Anderson, which reveals what happens to watersheds affected by clearcutting and spraying, will also be shown. There will be discussion of sensible watershed management practices that could help to protect drinking water. Food and beverages will be available.
