The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is accepting public comments, through close of business Jan. 8, on a request by the states of Oregon, Washington, and California for permission to trap and kill California sea lions.  The states want to be able to eliminate sea lions with no limit on time or place.

The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife claims that California sea lions have consumed 25% of steelhead bound for the Upper Willamette basin, and 6% of the Chinook salmon headed there, and that they are having a significant negative impact on recovery.  Opponents of sea lion killing, such as the Sea Lion Defense Brigade, argue that marine mammals have an essential role in the ecosystem, and that exterminating them won’t have a useful effect when the primarily impacts to salmon are human activity.
