The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is accepting comments on a proposed permit for dune grading in the Nedonna Beach area (at the north end of Rockaway Beach).  Following a public hearing on Tuesday evening, March 20, members of the public have seven days to add comments to the record.  This period closes at the end of the business day on March 27.

Residents of the Nedonna Beach area with homes adjacent to the beach wish to grade the dunes to improve your views.  Other residents of the area (including Oregon Shores members), who requested the public hearing, are concerned that this could increase the risk of wave overtopping and flooding, and also object to the disruption to wildlife habitat and the natural character of the shoreline.  View the application here.

The public can comment on the specifics of the local situation, or on the general concept of altering the shoreline by grading dunes to improve views.

Here are Oregon Shores’ comments on the Nedonna Beach application.

Comments should state in both subject line and the body of the comment Nedonna Fore Dune Plan.  Send to Jay Sennewald, Ocean Shores Coordinator for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, at jay.sennewald@oregon.gov or 12735 N.W. Pacific Coast Highway, Seal Rock, OR  97376. For more information, contact Sennewald at (541) 563-8504.
