For the seventh year, the Oregon Coastal Caucus (state legislators from coastal districts) is hosting an “economic summit” devoted to coastal issues. Co-sponsor this year is the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz. The event will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 22-23 at the Chinook Winds Casino & Resort (1777 N.W. 44th St.) in Lincoln City. The Oregon Coastal Caucus Economic Summit typically brings together congressional, state, local and tribal leaders, public policy advocates, academics and private partners to discuss a wide range of issues. For more information, visit this site.
The theme of this year’s Summit is “Education and the Sequestration of Carbon: A Collaborative Approach to Cap, Invest and Green Energy Job Growth.” Various panel discussions will focus on strategies for leveraging the coast's natural resources by addressing the promotion of carbon capture - a potentially major contribution to the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
The summit will also provide a platform for consideration of the findings of the Oregon Global Warming Commission’s 2017 Forest Carbon Task Force (data provided by the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon State University) and an exploration of the possibilities of Oregon advancing innovative storage technologies for carbon reduction.
The summit will also feature a discussion of the work of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Student Success and its efforts to identify the types of support needed to prepare children for pre-kindergarten, strategies for addressing chronic school absenteeism and the opportunities of student re-engagement to increase high school graduation rates.
