Netarts Spit Hike
CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer will be among the leaders of a guided hike up Netarts spit that begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 30. Exact location for the hike’s starting point will be revealed to those who RSVP.
Space is limited, so RSVPs are required. Go here to register.
The hike, which is family friendly, will explore the natural and cultural history of the Netarts Spit area. Fawn Custer will lead an exploration of the plants, animals, and other interesting finds in the driftline on the way up the spit, and discuss and demonstrate CoastWatch's marine debris survey on the return journey.
Fawn will be joined by Oregon State Parks rangers and members of Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS and Huehca Omeyocan cultural group for this two-mile guided walk at Cape Lookout State Park. This will be a chance to learn about the spit protecting Netarts Bay, plants found in this salty world, citizen science opportunities and the impacts of marine debris (walkers will assist with a beach clean-up). Huecha Omeyocan, a group dedicated to promoting cultural practices of the Prehispanic (Aztec) Mesoamerican peoples primarily through dance and music, will join the hike and perform traditional Aztec dance in honor of our oceans and beaches at the conclusion of the event.
