CoastWatch is collaborating with Bandon’s Shoreline Education for Awareness (SEA) on a series of educational events this winter and spring. One of these, a seminar on the always popular subject of marine mammals, is coming up Saturday, March 16, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Boathouse Auditorium at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (63466 Boat Basin Rd.) in Charleston. The event is free and open to all.
Leading off will be Nancy Treneman, now a research assistant at OIMB, formerly a long-time, highly respected high school biology teacher in Gold Beach. Her topic will be “Oregon Marine Mammals: An Ecological Perspective.”
Immediately following will be Dawn Goley, director of the Marine Mammal Education and Research Program at Humboldt State University, who will speak on “Marine Mammal Stranding.” CoastWatch is working with Dr. Goley to develop a new marine mammal stranding citizen science protocol, in which SEA will also be participating.
