A training session for this year’s citizen science survey of Oregon’s Black Oystercatcher population will take place on Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m.-noon, in the meeting room of the Newport office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (2127 S.E. Marine Science Dr.). Those attending will learn about these elusive inhabitants of our rocky shores, and gain instruction in how to contribute to knowledge about the birds’ reproductive success. Details will be provided about this year’s population survey, and subsequent nest surveys over the course of the spring and summer.
There is no charge for attending the training session, which will be led by Amelia O’Connor, a seabird biologist who works with Portland Audubon.

Sponsors for the event are the Audubon Society of Portland, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and local Audubon chapters. If planning to attend, or unable to attend but interested in participating, RSVP to Joe Liebezeit, Avian Conservation Manager for the Audubon Society of Portland, 971-222-6121, jliebezeit@audubonportland.org.
