If you might be interested in the COASST (Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team) beached bird survey, either to participate or just to learn what it is all about, you’ll have a chance to observe one on Wednesday, April 10, 10 a.m. at the Otter Rock Marine Reserve.  CoastWatchers Karen Driscoll and Dave Powell will conduct a regular monthly survey, and invite other CoastWatchers and the public to join them.  They will be glad to explain the survey and demonstrate the techniques used in conducting it.

CoastWatch is COASST’s Oregon partner.  We help to recruit volunteers to participate in the survey as part of our set of citizen science projects, although to become a full-fledged volunteer it is necessary to take a full-day training from COASST.

The survey gathers science-quality data that can be used by researchers and resource agencies, and helps to track the health of seabird populations and the state of the ocean.

For more information about the beached bird survey, contact Fawn Custer, CoastWatch volunteer coordinator, at (541) 270-0027, fawn@oregonshores.org.
