Open House on Navy Training Plan

If you didn’t know, the U.S. Navy practices for war in the ocean off Oregon (and from northern California to Southeast Alaska).  The Navy’s “Northwest Training and Testing” plan is now up for review.  The Navy seeks to renew its clearance to conduct such activities as “active sonar” and “explosives” in Pacific Northwest ocean waters beyond 2020. 

A series of open houses is being held, from Fort Bragg, California, to Ketchikan, Alaska, at which citizens can learn about the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement the Navy has been required to file in order to continue its activities in our waters.  There won’t be a presentation or public comment period.  Rather, members of the public can arrive anytime between 5-8 p.m., circulate around to learn about the plan, and discuss it with Navy personnel who will be present. 

The first open house in Oregon takes place on Tuesday, April 30, in the lobby of the Newport Performing Arts Center (777 W. Olive St.)
