The annual spring Pacific Brown Pelican Survey is coming up Saturday, May 18. (There will also be a fall survey on Sept. 14). Veterans of the survey are asked to step up again; new volunteers are welcomed.
Organized by the Audubon Society, these surveys offer volunteers a chance to contribute to citizen science on a one-shot basis. Volunteers are assigned specific sites (so it is essential to RSVP). They monitor those sites for at least one hour during a four-hour period ending at dusk. In Oregon, the hours 5-9 p.m. have been designated. The sites range from Chetco Point on the south coast to Fort Stevens State Park at the extreme north. Here is a link to the protocol you will use.
For information, to obtain a list of the sites, or to volunteer, contact Joe Liebezeit, Portland Audubon’s avian conservation manager, at jliebezeit@audubonportland.org, (971) 222-6121.
