Lecture on Managing Marine Protected Areas

As part of their Summer Seminar Series, the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) presents a talk by Will White of Oregon State University on “Linking Models and Data for Adaptive Management of Marine Protected Areas.”  The talk takes place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, in OIMB’s Boathouse Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. White, a professor of nearshore fisheries and oceanography, will discuss research that links mathematical models and empirical data to detect patterns of change in noisy data and make predictions that inform fisheries management and conservation. Currently, his major research areas are the dynamics of kelp forest fish species inside marine protected areas in Oregon and California, the effects of seasonal hypoxia (low oxygen levels) on the management of finfish and crab fisheries in Oregon, and the influence of environmental variability on predator-prey interactions and population dynamics of eastern oysters in Florida. 

While the subject matter may be technical, it addresses the key information needed to manage our marine reserves.

The OIMB Summer Seminar Series takes place on Wednesdays, through Aug. 17.  To reach the Boathouse Auditorium, park along Boat Basin Road by the campus and walk past the Coast Guard housing to the auditorium.
