Remote Rocky Shores Meeting

The process of revising Oregon’s regulations protecting rocky shore habitats continues.  With the basic draft of the new management strategy in place, the Rocky Habitat* Working Group of the state’s Ocean Policy Advisory Council is beginning the next phase, designation of protection levels for specific sites.  As a first step, the working group is holding a remote session on Tuesday, July 9, beginning at 9 a.m., to begin discussing the public process for designating sites for protection, and criteria for such designations.  This is a work session—no decisions will be made.

*This was formerly known as the Rocky Shores Working Group and the Rocky Shores Management Strategy.  The change was made because the strategy includes not just the shoreline, but offshore rocks, so the working group didn’t want it to sound as though only intertidal areas were included.  For the record, Oregon Shores considers the change to be absurd, since “rocky habitat” could mean anything from the summit of Mt. Hood to Willamette Falls to the Owyhee Canyonlands.  If at any stage of the process you choose to comment, we encourage you to urge a return to the more meaningful “rocky shores.”
