Tide-Driven Art Exhibit

While we don’t usually list art exhibits on this site, one that is coming up is so directly pertinent to coastal conservation that it deserves a mention.  On Saturday, Aug. 10, an exhibit called “Ode to the Tides” will have its official opening reception from 1-6 p.m. at the Newport Visual Arts Center (777 N.W. Beach Dr.). 

The exhibit and art sale is already available for viewing, and runs through Sept. 25.  It is actually spread among three locations—along with the Visual Arts Center, it is also found at the Hatfield Marine Science Center and the Pacific Marine Heritage Center.  It is also traveling to other locations around the state. 

A second opening reception will be held on Sunday, Aug. 11, 1-3 p.m. at the Pacific Marine Heritage Center (333 S.E. Bay Blvd. in Newport).

The Wetlands Conservancy and partners are sponsoring “Ode to the Tides” to highlight the beauty, ecology, and economic value of nearshore coastal habitats. The exhibit will focus on the plants, animals, and fish that live in estuaries and tidepools where fresh and salt water combine.  The goals of the exhibition are to celebrate the aesthetic and ecological significance of Oregon’s estuaries, tidepools and intertidal habitats, and build a diverse community of Oregonians and coastal visitors to promote protection and conservation for generations to come.  These are certainly goals that Oregon Shores endorses.

The exhibit contains original art created by Northwest artists in a variety of media.  It will be displayed at seven venues on the northern Oregon coast and in the Willamette Valley from May-December, 2019.  In addition to the exhibition and sales of art to support coastal conservation, each venue will offer scientific programs, student-led events, plus outdoor and food experiences for visitors throughout the period of the show.
