The Yaquina Birders & Naturalists are offering a guided nature walk on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 to about 11 a.m., which will explore both the Yaquina Bay shoreline and the south jetty.  Meet in the visitor center parking lot at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (2030 S.E. Marine Science Dr.) in Newport’s South Beach area.  The walk is free and open to all.

Trip leaders Steve and Rachel Holzman will guide the walk along the one-mile nature trail that begins at the HMSC and borders Yaquina Bay.  A focus will be returning winter waterfowl.  The group will look for ducks, songbirds, and any remaining shorebirds such as Dunlin, Western and Least Sanpiper, and Whimbrel.  The walk will then shift to the Yaquina’s south jetty, where assorted loons, cormorants, grebes and fishing boats are likely to be on view.
