Learn about the black oystercatcher, a unique shorebird of conservation concern that depends on rocky shoreline habitats, in a talk sponsored by the Necanicum Watershed Council on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 6 p.m. at the Seaside Public Library (1131 Broadway St.).  Learn about this bird's unique life history, conservation challenges, and the results of the multi-year monitoring effort being conducted by Portland Audubon, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and coastal partners. The event is free and open to al.

The speaker, Joe Liebezeit, has worked for Portland Audubon since 2013, acting as their staff scientist and leading their community science and coastal conservation programs. Prior to his position with Portland Audubon, Liebezeit worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society for 12 years leveraging on-the-ground science efforts to protect wildlife in Arctic Alaska. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire and a Master’s Degree in Wildlife Management from Humboldt State University. His work crosses conservation science, policy and outreach disciplines.

The lecture is part of the Listening to the Land monthly winter speaker series offered January through May by the Necanicum Watershed Council in partnership with the Seaside Public Library. Presentations are held the third Wednesday of every month starting at 6 p.m. at the Seaside Library. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.  All these events are free and open to the public.
