Cancelled:  The following event has been cancelled in accordance with directives from the governor's office and the public university system regarding the coronavirus situation.  The organizers state that it will be offered at a later date.

A special brown-bag, lunchtime presentation on how Oregonians value the coast will take place at noon on Wednesday, March 18, in the Guin Library Seminar Room at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (2030 Marine Science Dr., in the South Beach area of Newport).

The topic is “Understanding Oregonians’ Coastal Values through Participatory GIS Mapping.”  The presenters, all from Portland State University, are Kaegan Scully-Engelmeyer, Dr. Elise Granek, and Dr. Max Nielsen-Pincus.  This discussion concerns one of the “Human Dimensions Research” projects sponsored by the marine reserves program of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

A description of the subject matter:

“To date, there has been little examination statewide of Oregonians’ priorities and perceptions of marine resources and management more broadly. This study examined Oregonians’ perceived values of marine resources and related management priorities using a public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) mapping survey. These data were used to measure the values Oregonians hold for Oregon’s coastal and marine ecosystems, assemble spatially explicit baseline data on coastal benefits and values along the Oregon coast, and identify the suite of coastal and marine ecosystem services that Oregonians prioritize from the marine reserve network.  We found values and management priorities varied based on participants’ home region in Oregon, with regions of the state demonstrating distinct value orientations.”
