Aquaculture Seminar

Dr. Jan Hodder.

Bandon’s Shoreline Education for Awareness (SEA) has resumed its seminar series, now moved online.  First up will be Jan Hodder, retired from her position as a senior lecturer at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, where she taught about marine birds and mammals for more than 30 years and organized OIMB’s summer program. Dr. Hodder will speak on “Farming the Sea” on Tuesday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m.  The public is invited.

As she describes her topic:  "About half of the world's freshwater and marine fish consumption comes from farming these animals. As more people move to eat seafood, marine aquaculture will become increasingly important in providing the source of that food. This talk will look at the how, what, and where of this food source from a global, national and local perspective. It will explore many of the issues associated with marine aquaculture and provide examples of the variety of aquaculture operations near and far.”

SEA organizes volunteers to serve as docents informing the public and guiding responsible use at Bandon’s Coquille Point, and serves as a Friends group for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
