In the coronavirus era, the Hatfield Marine Science Center is holding its seminar series online. These events are free and open to the public.
Next up is Fabio Prior Caltabellotta, UF/IFAS Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, University of Florida, speaking on “Life history of elasmobranch fishes: How can we inform data-deficient species?” Elasmobranchs are the sharks, skates, and rays. The seminar takes place on Thursday, July 9, at 3:30 p.m.
Dr. Caltabellotta’s description of the lecture’s topic:
“Worldwide, the main impediment in assessing the status of many elasmobranch fishes (38.9%) is their general lack of life history characteristics. Life history characteristics are fundamental for assessing specie's risk of overexploitation. For example, age and growth data are crucial as the central basis of population dynamic models. However, collection of elasmobranch specimens is opportunistic and prevents sufficient certainty on life history characteristics necessary for management. Considering the high degree of Data Deficient elasmobranch species, we used a promising approach (Bayesian framework) for tackling data limitation and also incorporating uncertainty into derived life history characteristics. The Bayesian approach proved to be useful for utilizing limited age-growth data in other Data Deficient species to inform necessary life characteristics for conservation and management.”
