Discussion of Ocean and Climate

The Ocean Conservancy is sponsoring a national online discussion on “Building a Blue-Green Future: Ocean-Climate Action for 2021,” 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10.  The virtual symposium is free and open to all.

The event will feature themes from Ocean Conservancy’s recently released Action Agenda for a Blue-Green Future: U.S. Federal Ocean-Climate Recommendations for 2021.

Speakers will describe the ways in which climate change is the greatest threat to the ocean and the communities that rely on its health, yet the ocean is also a source of sustainable climate solutions. A comprehensive climate strategy will aim to maximize ocean-based mitigation measures—from decarbonizing the shipping sector to protecting and restoring coastal blue carbon ecosystems—to complement the full suite of climate policies necessary for overall decarbonization. It will also aim to maximize adaptation measures that increase the resilience of frontline communities and ecosystems to unavoidable ocean-climate impacts.

Keynote speaker will be Representative Kathy Castor (FL), Chair, House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

She will be followed by an “armchair discussion” moderated by Anne Merwin, vice-president for conservation of the Ocean Conservancy, and featuring Sue Biniaz, Senior Fellow for Climate Change, U.N. Foundation; Janis Searles Jones, CEO, Ocean Conservancy; and Andrés Jimenez, Executive Director, Green 2.0.  A Q&A session will follow.
